The girls gathered in the parlour as usual and made no mention of Miss Valerie’s flustered appearance. Likely, they took no notice at all, Valerie thought, and it was only she who knew how torn her soul was within her. The girls had spent all week talking about their new arrival, speculating about her icy disposition, the allure of her withdrawn nature, the scandal that a girl so pretty should be so sullen, and jealous that their own favoured clients might flock to her door because of it. All six of the girls had a theory about what it was that made her so exciting to the men, but only Valerie knew for certain: it was not the fact of her being withdrawn, but the promise that with just the right inducement, she might come alive in your hands and grace you with the truest passion of your life. The girls cheered and whistled, and Miranda inclined her head toward them all, a tight smile on her face. This was all so new to her, and the other girls with their peeking nipples and purring voices seemed to intimidate her a little. But a wink from Mercy and Jezebel, and she seemed sufficiently assured to stand and curtsey to the assembly.

"As you well know, she comes highly recommended, and I can assure you ladies that I know she will be a welcome treat to our clientèle, and a boon to our whole establishment. If she requires anything, or requests your assistance, do not hesitate to come to her aid. We were all new once, and we shall not hold her inexperience against her. And so, ladies, remember your manners, please your clients, and as always: please yourselves."

Sure enough, when the doors opened, a throng of gentlemen entered immediately, filling the vacuum of the grand lobby and whooping with delight at the assembled beauties. One man removed his top hat and handed his cane to Seamus without saying a word, and plucked Sally from her position on the stairs, playfully squeezing her breast and sweeping her up into his arms.

“Oh, Mister Clayton, how I have missed you!” she giggled as he slammed her door shut behind him.
